With the rise of using computers, tablets, and smartphones almost every waking minute has come the rise of “tech neck.” Tech neck is the term used to describe neck pain due to practicing poor posture while using various technological devices, both at work and during free time. Our Suwanee chiropractor, Dr. Thomas Caputo, offers tips on how to prevent neck pain while sitting at your computer desk.

Make Sure Your Workspace Is Ergonomically Optimized

The main reason for neck pain while sitting at your desk is poor ergonomics. We now have quality computer chairs and desks that promote great posture and help you avoid neck pain, back pain, headaches, and more. Replace or adjust your computer chair so you can sit with your feet flat on the floor, knees bent at a 90-degree angle, and hold both your arms and chin parallel to the floor. Adjust the height of your monitor so you’re looking straight at it. You shouldn’t be tilting your head up or down, both of which can lead to neck strain and pain.

Get Up and Move at Intervals

Healthy movement helps keep the body out of pain. You may not always be able to take a break, but whenever you can, get up, stretch, and walk around your space. This helps prevent stiffness while promoting healthy blood flow.

Invest in a Sit-Stand Desk

Research shows that having a standing desk setup helps keep energy levels up and can boost productivity. Standing while working at a computer can take a tiny bit of getting used to, but it becomes as natural as sitting all day and it can help you avoid pain.
